About Île du Havre-Aubert (L'Anse à la Cabane, Amherst Island, Cap du Sud) Lighthouse
A hexagonal wooden tower, standing 16.5 meters tall, was constructed and first lit in 1871 at the south end of Île du Havre-Aubert. Painted white, the tower features a red lantern and gallery. Coastal erosion eventually necessitated its relocation inland between 2012 and 2014. The light was deactivated in December 2011, ending its active operational period. By 2020, the structure had been repainted and was reported to be in good condition.
Why it matters: This lighthouse marks the southern extremity of the Magdalen Islands, serving as a navigational aid for vessels in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Its relocation due to erosion highlights the challenges of preserving historic structures in vulnerable coastal areas.
