Located on an isolated island about 50 kilometers south of Port Cartier, Quebec, the Île du Grand Caouis lighthouse was constructed in 1955. The structure is an octagonal concrete tower, 10 meters in height, finished in white with a red lantern room. Its light produces a single white flash every 6 seconds, visible for 17.9 nautical miles from a focal plane of 45 meters. The keeper's residence was taken down after the station's automation in 1970. Reaching this site is possible only by boat.
Why it matters: This light serves as a navigation aid for ships traveling along the north bank of the St. Lawrence River, indicating the entry to areas south of Port Cartier.
