About Île du Corossol Lighthouse
Also known as: Île du Corossol (Carousel Island, Sept-Îles)
An octagonal concrete tower, 17 meters in height, stands on a remote island at the entrance to Sept-Îles. Painted white with a red lantern room, the structure was first lit in 1953. It is situated within the Île du Corossol Migratory Bird Sanctuary, an area protected for its avian population. The lighthouse ceased operation in 1988 and has since been deteriorating due to abandonment. A nearby port, Pointe Noire, lies 5.9 kilometers away.
Why it matters: The lighthouse originally guided vessels into the port of Sept-Îles, marking the critical approach to the harbor. There is interest from the Uashat-Maliotenam First Nation council in restoring the station as a heritage attraction.
