About Île de Patiras Lighthouse
Also known as: Île de Patiras (feu postérieur)
Île de Patiras lighthouse, built of masonry in 1879, is a cylindrical white tower that stands 22 meters high. A 9-meter cylindrical lantern structure was added in 1971, increasing the total height to 31 meters. The station was established in 1860, and the lighthouse formerly served as the rear light of an upstream range. It was deactivated in 1992 after changes in the channel rendered its navigational purpose obsolete. The structure was damaged by a storm in 1999 and subsequently restored, reopening to the public in 2008. Access to the island is by boat from Pauillac.
Why it matters: Though no longer an active aid to navigation, Île de Patiras lighthouse preserves the maritime history of the Gironde estuary and has been revitalized as a public historical and tourist site.
