About Økshammaren Lighthouse
Also known as: Økshammaren (Økshamaren)
A white, octagonal concrete structure, Økshammaren lighthouse was first lit in 1918, replacing an earlier station established in 1849. The lighthouse is situated atop a nearly vertical cliff overlooking the Norwegian coast near Austevoll. Its lantern room, standing 4 meters high, emits a light with a focal height of 22 meters. The characteristic is two white flashes every 8 seconds, with red and green sectors also present. The geographic range of the light is 13.6 nautical miles. The structure itself is painted white.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's position on a near-vertical cliff provides visibility over a wide sea area, warning vessels of nearby coastal hazards. Its light, which changes color, offers precise directional guidance essential for navigating this part of the Norwegian coast.
