Situated on the extreme southern point of Sakhalin Island, Kril'on Lighthouse consists of an octagonal red brick tower attached to the front of a single-story brick keeper's residence. The tower measures 15 meters in height, with the light positioned 48 meters above sea level. Its illumination is white and displays an Al.F.W.R characteristic. The light's visibility extends to 18.4 nautical miles. This structure, erected in 1894, has been managed by Japanese, Soviet, and currently the Russian Hydrographic Service.
Why it matters: Kril'on Lighthouse provides a navigation aid for vessels navigating the currents and frequent fog near Cape Crillon, a main headland in the La Perouse Strait. This passage links the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk, making the lighthouse a primary reference point for maritime traffic on this route.
