Knippelholmen Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Knippelholmen Lighthouse
Also known as: #Knippelholmen
Knippelholmen lighthouse stood on a rocky islet north of the entrance to Gothenburg, approximately 800 meters from the Arendal waterfront. The first station at this location was established in 1880. An initial lighthouse was later replaced by a concrete tower in 1948. The final structure, a 6-meter cylindrical concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, was built in 1962. It was painted with black and white horizontal bands and served for over four decades. The light was extinguished in 2004 and the tower was removed around 2015, replaced by a smaller daybeacon.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marked the northern approach to Gothenburg, guiding vessels past a rocky islet at the harbor entrance. Its removal reflects changes in the approach channel and maritime navigation.
