About Karangwuni Lighthouse
Also known as: Karangwuni (Karang Wuni, Wates)
This octagonal concrete lighthouse, standing 30 meters tall, is situated onshore in Wates, Kulon Progo Regency. It replaced a former square white skeletal tower when it became operational in 2020. The white tower features a lantern and gallery, with the light situated 32 meters above the water. It emits a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for up to 15.7 nautical miles. While the site is open to the public, climbing the tower is not permitted.
Why it matters: The lighthouse serves as a navigational aid for vessels traversing the coast west of Yogyakarta City.
