Kaminato Kō Lighthouse

🇯🇵Tokyo, JPOperational

Built in 1990, the Kaminato Kō lighthouse is a 10-meter tall, round cylindrical concrete tower with a flared top. It stands on the breakwater at the traditional fishing harbor of Kaminato, located on the northeast side of Hachijōjima. The focal height of its light was 17 meters, and it had a geographic range of 12.4 nautical miles. For over two decades, this structure served local fishing vessels. The lighthouse has been inactive since 2016, following an extension of the breakwater and the installation of a new active light. It remains standing on the breakwater.

Why it matters: The Kaminato Kō lighthouse was important for the safe navigation of fishing boats entering the traditional Kaminato harbor, a key area for island life. Its continued presence alongside the newer active light serves as a historical marker of the harbor's infrastructure evolution.
