Isola di Pianosa Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Isola di Pianosa Lighthouse
A cylindrical concrete tower, 17 meters high, stands on Isola di Pianosa. Built in 1948, it features a white lantern and gallery, attached to a single-story keeper's house. The lighthouse emits two white flashes every 10 seconds. A fishermen's shelter was added in 1953, though storms have since damaged both this structure and the keeper's house. The island itself is remote, low-lying, and lies about 22 kilometers east-northeast of other islands in its group, making it difficult to see.
Why it matters: This lighthouse served to warn mariners of the low-lying and often hidden Isola di Pianosa, a hazard in the open sea, helping to prevent groundings.
