About Illa na Guardis Lighthouse
Also known as: Illa na Guardis (Isla de la Guardia)
The Illa na Guardis lighthouse is a 5-meter tall cylindrical concrete tower located on a small island off the entrance to the harbor of Colònia Sant Jordi. Its focal height is 7 meters, and it exhibits a white light with one white flash every 10 seconds. The structure's lower half is strongly conical. Between 2013 and 2022, its appearance changed from green to yellow with a single black horizontal band. This update also included a new daymark and light pattern to meet international standards, directing vessels to pass to the west. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is indispensable for maritime safety, specifically guiding ships into the harbor of Colònia Sant Jordi. Its unique light pattern and daymark, which mandate passing to the west, are critical for preventing groundings or collisions in the approach channel.
