About Illa des Penjats Lighthouse
Also known as: Illa des Penjats (Islote Ahorcados, Los Freus, Freu Grande)
This cylindrical masonry lighthouse stands 20 meters tall on a small islet 1.8 kilometers south of Ibiza's southernmost point. Originally built in 1856, its height was increased by 5 meters in 1861. The tower features distinctive black and white horizontal bands and is topped by a lantern and gallery, rising from a 1-story keeper's house. It emits three white flashes every 14 seconds. The site is open, but the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels through the difficult passage between Formentera and Ibiza, warning them of a barely-submerged ridge connecting the two islands.
