Hietasaari Range Front Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Hietasaari Range Front Lighthouse
The Hietasaari Range Front structure, a cylindrical concrete tower standing 14 meters tall, was built in 1949. Originally painted white, most of its paint has since weathered away. The station was established in 1928, with an initial wooden daybeacon erected that same year. This original structure was fitted with a light in 1939 but was destroyed by high water in 1948. The current tower replaced it the following year. Although its operational life as a navigational light concluded in 1978, it continued to function as a daybeacon until 2023.
Why it matters: This range front light was essential for guiding vessels through the narrow channel separating Hietasaari from Oulu, facilitating safe passage.
