About Hatholmen Lighthouse
Also known as: Hatholmen (Hattholmen)
Constructed in 1867, Hatholmen Lighthouse is a 7-meter tall, cylindrical wooden tower topped with a lantern and gallery. The tower, painted white with a red roof, stands on an island in Mannefjorden, approximately 1.5 kilometers south of Mandal. Its focal plane reaches 19 meters above sea level, emitting three white, red, and green flashes every 10 seconds. The lighthouse marks the western side of the Mannefjorden, guiding vessels into the harbor at Mandal. Since 1991, Mandal Kystlag has been responsible for the station's upkeep.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's unique construction, with its tower integrated into the keeper's house, represents a distinct style of Norwegian coastal architecture. Its continued operation and role in local tourism, including overnight stays, underscore its cultural value.
