About Hamilton Sound and Wadham Islands Lighthouses Lighthouse
The lighthouse marking Hamilton Sound on South Change Island was first lit in 1901. The current structure, a 9.5-meter-tall square skeletal mast, was erected in 2014. It displays a white light with a single flash every 4 seconds, visible for 11.6 nautical miles. The mast is adorned with a red daymark featuring a white horizontal band. The original lighthouse, a wooden pyramidal tower, was later demolished to make way for a skeletal tower. The station's site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This light guides vessels through Hamilton Sound, a waterway between Fogo Island and the Newfoundland mainland.
