About Göteborgsgrund Lighthouse
Also known as: Göteborgsgrund (relocated)
The Göteborgsgrund lighthouse, constructed in 1939, featured a 6-meter-tall, white, cylindrical tower. It began operation in 1939 with a focal height of 15 meters, casting light over a 11.9 nautical mile geographic range. Located on a shoal south of the Göteborg entrance channel, the structure was taken down in 2003 to allow for channel widening. The lantern from the original tower is now preserved and exhibited on a replica structure at the Eriksberg ferry pier, situated on the north side of the Göta River in Göteborg.
Why it matters: The lighthouse originally marked a specific shoal, aiding safe navigation into the Göteborg entrance channel. Its preserved lantern, now part of a replica tower, acts as a cultural artifact reflecting Göteborg's maritime past and harbor expansion.
