Griffiths Island Lighthouse

This cylindrical stone tower, standing 11 meters tall, was constructed in 1859 on the eastern point of Griffiths Island. It features a white exterior with red trim, including a red lantern roof. The lighthouse emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles. The original keeper's houses at the station were demolished around 1956. A significant restoration of the site was completed by volunteers in 2000, who cleared non-native vegetation and revealed historical foundations. The site is accessible to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's stone construction reflects local building materials from its construction era. It is endangered by rising sea levels, presenting a contemporary challenge to coastal heritage structures.
