About Green Island Lighthouse
Also known as: Green Island (Chebogue Point)
The lighthouse on Green Island, Nova Scotia, is a 6-meter-tall cylindrical white tower built in 1964. It rises from a corner of a one-story fog signal building, which was originally established as a fog signal station in 1919. The focal height of the light is 25 meters, and it projects a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 14.3 nautical miles. This structure replaced the earlier fog signal station to provide a visual aid. Although the lighthouse became inactive in 2014 when its lantern room was removed, a new light was erected on a metal tower the same year. The original lighthouse structure is now considered endangered.
Why it matters: The Green Island lighthouse is important for marking a small island located about 10 km south of Cape Forchu, which could pose a hazard to shipping in the area.
