About Great Wicomico River Lighthouse
Also known as: #Great Wicomico River (?)
A steel skeletal tower on a screwpile foundation first lit in 1889 guided mariners near the mouth of the Great Wicomico River in the Chesapeake Bay. The original hexagonal cottage screwpile lighthouse was demolished in 1967. A new steel skeletal tower was then built on the same screwpile foundation. This replacement light served until 2015, when it was deactivated and its light and platform removed. The site is now marked by stakes.
Why it matters: Its long service marked a significant point for maritime safety in the region, providing guidance for vessels navigating the entrance to the Great Wicomico River.
