Grauten Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Grauten Lighthouse
Built in 1911, the Grauten lighthouse is a 11-meter-tall cylindrical concrete tower located on a small island northeast of Gotland. Its lantern room and gallery sit atop the bright orange structure. The light emits two white, red, or green flashes every six seconds, providing directional guidance. This light's color changes based on the observer's bearing. In 2008, a proposal to decommission the light was made but not enacted, allowing it to continue its operation. The island hosting the lighthouse is privately owned and not accessible to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's directional light is significant for mariners navigating the waters near Valleviken and along the northeast coast of Gotland, aiding in hazard avoidance and maintaining correct bearings.
