About Grand Marais West Breakwater Lighthouse
Also known as: [Grand Marais West Breakwater]
This 8-meter tall cylindrical tower is situated at the terminus of the west breakwater in Grand Marais, Minnesota. The structure, a round cylindrical D9 design, was painted white with a green horizontal band. It was built in the 1960s, succeeding a light first activated in 1902. The light's focal plane sits at 10 meters above water. Its illumination is a green flash occurring every four seconds (Fl G 4s), visible for 10.4 nautical miles. The U.S. Coast Guard manages this navigational aid.
Why it matters: This marker defines the western edge of the harbour approach, serving as a reference point for ships entering Grand Marais harbour and aiding in avoiding the breakwater structure.
