About Germandö Lighthouse
Also known as: Germandö (Germandön) (1 and 2)
The Germandö lighthouse, a 12-meter cylindrical concrete tower painted red with a white lantern, was built in 1966. The station's operational history began much earlier, with its first light appearing in 1882 from the keeper's house. This current structure replaced earlier navigational aids, standing on the southeastern tip of Germandö island, approximately 25 km southeast of Luleå. Although its active service ended by the mid-1990s, the light station was sold at auction in 2017 to Luleå Kommun. Volunteers have since been engaged in restoring the station, and ownership has been transferred to a preservation organization.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the southeastern extremity of Germandö and serves as a navigational reference for vessels approaching Luleå. Its restoration by volunteers highlights its community value and local maritime heritage.
