Gallows Point Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Gallows Point Lighthouse
This 7-meter square cylindrical cabinet light, painted white with a red top, is situated on a stone pier just off the southern tip of Protection Island. The first light at this location was established in 1902 by the New Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. A keeper's cottage was constructed around 1912. The current light structure was installed between 2015 and 2016, replacing an earlier tower. It emits an isophase white light with a 2-second cycle, visible for 9.3 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The light guides vessels entering Nanaimo Harbour around Protection Island. Historically, it supported the region's coal shipping.
