This 9.5-meter white post structure was built in 2017 to guide vessels into Ōfunato Wan. It is situated on the south breakwater marking the bay's entrance, approximately 8 km south of the city of Ōfunato. The light emits a green occulting flash every 6 seconds from a focal height of 12 meters, with a geographic range of 11 nautical miles. The original lighthouse at this location was destroyed by the tsunami in 2011. The current post is centered on a small equipment cabinet.
Why it matters: Rebuilt after the 2011 tsunami, this light is essential for safely guiding maritime traffic into Ōfunato Wan, a port serving fishing and commercial vessels.
