Fuerte de la Galea Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Fuerte de la Galea Lighthouse
The Fuerte de la Galea lighthouse is an unpainted, round cylindrical stone tower with a gallery, standing 10 meters tall. Built in 1895, it is located about 600 meters southeast of Punta Galea, at the water's edge near Getxo. This structure is situated within a historic fort dating to the mid-18th century. An earlier lighthouse was constructed directly into the fort's wall in 1852. The current tower became inactive around 1905, shortly after its establishment. The site is open to the public, though access to the tower itself is not permitted.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's construction in 1895 continued a maritime tradition in the area that began with a station established in 1782. Its integration within an 18th-century fort highlights a unique combination of defensive and navigational purposes.
