Flatøy Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Flatøy Lighthouse
Flatøy Lighthouse consists of an octagonal cylindrical concrete tower, 16 meters in height, built in 1966. The tower is attached to a 1-1/2 story keeper's house, originally established in 1882. The light emits a white flash. The station is situated on the west end of Flatøy, a small island in the Vestfjord, approximately 8 km west of Steigen. After its operational period, the light was deactivated in 2006. The site was later leased to a sports diving club in 1985, and by 2005, Steigen Kommune and a friends group took over for preservation.
Why it matters: The lighthouse site is notable for its community-led preservation efforts, transforming it into an accommodation facility. It also represents the shift in lighthouse technology with its original keeper's house and later automated tower.
