Location & Light Range
About Five Islands Lighthouse
Also known as: Five Islands (relocated)
This square pyramidal wood tower, standing 10 meters tall, was first lit in 1913 near Five Islands, Nova Scotia. It features white paint with red trim and includes a lantern and gallery. The lighthouse has been moved multiple times due to coastal erosion, first in 1952, again in 1957, then in 1996, and most recently in November 2008 to its present location. In 2013, its 100th anniversary was celebrated. Access to the interior has been closed since 2019 because of deteriorating ladders.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's repeated relocations to avoid coastal erosion highlight a unique history of community preservation efforts.
