About Finnvær Lighthouse
Finnvær Lighthouse, built in 1912, is a cylindrical white wood tower rising from a 2-1/2 story wood keeper's house. This structure stands on a small island in the Norwegian Sea, approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Mausund. The tower, painted white with a red lantern, has a height of 15 meters. Its construction material is wood, a design feature found in some Norwegian coastal lights. The lighthouse was operational for over seven decades before being decommissioned in 1985. The nearest port is Valsneset, 20.5 kilometers away.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's strategic placement in the Norwegian Sea was important for local fishing fleets and coastal shipping navigating the complex archipelago northeast of Mausund. Although inactive, the lighthouse continues to draw visitors, preserving a tangible link to the region's maritime past.
