East Island Lighthouse

A white skeletal steel tower stands 19 meters tall on East Island, part of the Lacepede Islands archipelago. Its light, situated 25 meters above sea level, emits a single white flash every two seconds and has a geographic range of 14.3 nautical miles. The lighthouse station was first established in 1968, with the current structure and its light becoming operational in 1984. Located approximately 120 kilometers north of Broome in Western Australia, the lighthouse sits at the southeastern end of a coral reef. While the island site is accessible to visitors, the tower itself is closed to the public.

Why it matters: The lighthouse serves as a critical navigational aid, warning mariners of the extensive coral reef system surrounding East Island within the Lacepede Islands.
