East Ironbound Island Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About East Ironbound Island Lighthouse
Built in 1871, the East Ironbound Island Lighthouse stands at 11 meters tall, with its focal height reaching 44.5 meters. The structure is a square cylindrical wood tower, painted white, topped with a red lantern and gallery. This tower rises from one end of a 1-1/2 story wood keeper's house. The light emits a white flash that is visible for three seconds followed by three seconds of darkness, completing its cycle every 6 seconds. The station was established in 1867, and the current lighthouse guides vessels navigating off the entrance to Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia. The Canadian Coast Guard manages the operational light.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is a rare and valuable example of mid-nineteenth century lighthouse design. Its location off the entrance to Mahone Bay provides guidance for maritime traffic entering and exiting the area.
