Dunkirk Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Dunkirk Lighthouse
The Dunkirk Lighthouse, also called the Point Gratiot Light, stands 18.5 meters tall. Its focal height reaches 25 meters, providing a geographic range of 16 nautical miles. The tower, built of rubblestone encased in brick, has its upper two-thirds painted white, with the lower third left in its natural stone color. The lantern housing is red. This lighthouse emits an occulting white light. The current tower was first lit in 1875, following the establishment of the light in 1826. It was automated in 1960 and remains operational.
Why it matters: The Dunkirk Lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Point Gratiot Lighthouse Complex. Its original third-order Fresnel lens, installed in 1857, is still in operation, which is a notable rarity among active lighthouses in the United States.
