About Cole Shoal Lighthouse
Also known as: Cole Shoal (Range Front) (Five Mile)
This square pyramidal wood tower stands 10 meters tall and is painted white. It was built in 2020 to replace a structure destroyed by fire in 2018. The original station was established in 1856, and this light served as the front light for the Cole Shoal Range between 1916 and 1927. Deactivated in 1927, the previous tower underwent restoration by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 2002. The current tower features a gallery and sits on a rock in the St. Lawrence River, marking the Canadian Middle Channel within the Thousand Islands region, approximately 8 km southwest of Brockville.
Why it matters: The rebuilding of this light in 2020 by a community committee highlights its local historical and cultural value after its destruction by fire.
