Location & Light Range
About Coal Mine Reach Lighthouse
A red cylindrical steel tower, 18 meters high with a white horizontal band, marks Coal Mine Reach. The light is located 20 meters above sea level and emits a white flash every five seconds. This structure, built and first lit in 1957, replaced an earlier skeletal tower. It stands in a narrow strait southwest of Tawau, near the Indonesian border and the northwestern tip of Pulau Sebatik. The lighthouse is accessible only by boat.
Why it matters: This lighthouse guides vessels through the narrow strait between Pulau Sebatik and the mainland, a geographically sensitive shipping lane near the Indonesian border.
