About Carleton Island Lighthouse
A 26-meter square skeletal tower marks the southwest point of Carleton Island. Built and first lit in 1914, this structure replaced an earlier, simpler lantern on a wooden mast. The station also included a two-story keeper's house. While operational, it guided vessels navigating the waters near Cape Vincent. The lighthouse was inactive by the 1920s, bringing its active service to a relatively short end. The island and its structures are now privately owned and not open to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was built to guide vessels through the waters near Cape Vincent Village. Its brief operational period provides insight into changing navigation needs.
