Cape Elizabeth East Lighthouse

Fl W 15s🇺🇸Southern Maine, USOperational

Also known as: Two Lights

The eastern tower of the former Two Lights station, built in 1874, now operates as Cape Elizabeth East lighthouse. This white tower stands 39.3 meters tall, with its light positioned 39.5 meters above sea level. It emits a white flash, visible for 15 nautical miles. The original light station consisted of two towers until 1924, at which point only the eastern tower remained active. The facility is not accessible to the public.

Why it matters: This lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Two Lights on December 27, 1974. The western tower previously served as a fire control tower during World War II.

Background
Cape Elizabeth Light (also known as Two Lights) is a lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, at the southwestern entrance to Casco Bay in Maine. Only the eastern tower of the two that made up the light station until 1924 is active. Until recently, the eastern light used a second-order Fresnel lens. The western tower is deactivated, but remains standing. Public Access to the light station is prohibited by both the US Government and multiple private landowners. The facility is adjacent to Two Lights State Park, a 41-acre (17 ha) state facility. However, the park no longer has view of the lighthouses, and some people opt to tour the area by boat to avoid trespassing. The park was the Cape Elizabeth Military Reservation, part of the Harbor Defenses of Portland, in World War II, during which the former western lighthouse was a fire control tower. Cape Elizabeth Light, designed in the Gothic Revival style, was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Two Lights on December 27, 1974.
