About Cap-aux-Meules Lighthouse
Also known as: Cap-aux-Meules (Grindstone, Pointe Hérisse, Étang-du-Nord)
A round, 11.5-meter fiberglass tower, painted white with a red lantern, stands at Pointe Hérisse on Île du Cap aux Meules. Its light's focal height reaches 28 meters above sea level. The current structure, built in 1987, is a replacement for earlier lights that began service in 1874. Subsequent towers were erected in 1912 and 1967. The light emits a white flash every 6 seconds, visible for 14.9 nautical miles. Though deactivated in 2015, the site remains accessible to visitors.
Why it matters: This light provided navigation aid for ships approaching Île du Cap aux Meules, a primary island within the Magdalen archipelago, with its structural evolution demonstrating changes in navigation aids and construction.
