About Cabo Melamo Lighthouse
Also known as: Cabo Melamo (Cabo Columulomo)
Located on the eastern point at the entry to Mozambique's Bay of Nacala, this skeletal steel tower stands 12 meters in height. It was first illuminated in 1993, succeeding a station set up in 1949. The lighthouse shows a white light, flashing once every 4 seconds, from a focal plane of 10 meters. Its light reaches out 10.4 nautical miles. The structure, painted white, is about 10 kilometers from Nacala port and guides ships entering the bay.
Why it matters: The lighthouse identifies the eastern side of the Bay of Nacala opening, a primary marker for secure passage into the port.
