About Baixo Ribeiro Lighthouse
Also known as: Baixo Ribeiro (Ribeiro Shoal)
This red cylindrical tower, standing 14 meters high, was built in 1990 on a shoal at the northern entrance to Maputo Bay. It guides vessels with a red light that flashes every 4 seconds, visible for 13.2 nautical miles. The lighthouse stands on a round pier and features a gallery. The station was first established in 1914, with the current structure replacing an earlier one. While the site is accessible by boat, the tower itself is closed to the public.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for vessels navigating the busy shipping lanes into Maputo Bay, warning them of a hazardous shoal at the bay's northern entrance.
