About Cabo Lastres Lighthouse
Constructed in 1993, the Cabo Lastres lighthouse is a white cylindrical concrete tower with black trim, measuring 18 meters in height. It stands atop a steep headland approximately 6 kilometers north of Colunga and 40 kilometers east of Gijón. The equipment building is a single-story masonry structure from which the tower rises, topped with a lantern and gallery. This lighthouse emits five white flashes every 30 seconds, with its focal plane situated 118 meters above sea level, providing a geographic range of 26.7 nautical miles. The site is open to visitors, though the tower itself remains closed to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was added to the maritime signaling plan in response to the loss of the fishing trawler El Bello 1, marking a hazardous area near Colunga.
