About Blokzijl Lighthouse
Also known as: Blokzijl (replica)
A 6-meter square skeletal tower made of wood, erected in 2008, holds a hexagonal cast iron lantern and gallery, all finished in white. This reconstruction is situated inland near Marknesse, in the Flevoland region, recalling its original position on the Zuider Zee. The first lighthouse, established in 1907, provided navigation for the northeastern Zuider Zee until its removal in 1942. The area's maritime character changed due to land recovery work, making this structure a reminder of past times. Vollenhove, a port 1.6 kilometers distant, is the closest to this rebuilt beacon.
Why it matters: The Blokzijl lighthouse, a reconstruction of a 1942-dismantled structure, acts as a historical reference to the Netherlands' extensive land recovery initiatives and the conversion of the Zuider Zee into the Noordoostpolder.
