About Bjugnskjæret Lighthouse
This stone cairn lighthouse, constructed in 1899, stands 6 meters tall with a focal height of 6.5 meters. Its pyramidal stone tower is painted white and topped with a red roof, housing a lantern and gallery. The light emits two white flashes on an 8-second cycle, with red and green sectors also indicated. Located at the westernmost point of a hazardous reef approximately 4 kilometers northwest of Uthaug, it warns vessels away from submerged dangers. The lighthouse has been operational since its construction and its site is accessible to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's ability to display white, red, or green light based on the direction of approach offers precise guidance for navigating the complex coastal waters and avoiding the dangerous reef.
