About Biwase Hana Lighthouse
Also known as: Biwase Hana (Biwase Kō)
This white concrete post structure stands 8.5 meters tall, with its light positioned 12 meters above sea level. It is situated at the eastern end of the detached south breakwater, marking the entrance to Biwase, a fishing port on the south side of the Cape Kiritappu peninsula in Hokkaido Prefecture. The light emits a single green flash every 3 seconds, visible for 11 nautical miles. The operational post rises from a square, single-story concrete equipment shelter. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The light is essential for local fishing boats navigating the waters and safely entering the Biwase fishing port, particularly during periods of low visibility or at night.
