Bastøy Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Bastøy Lighthouse
A square, cylindrical stone tower, 14 meters high, was built in 1918 and first lit that same year. It is white with a red lantern and gallery and is attached to a 1-1/2 story wood keeper's house. The lighthouse was inactive from 1896 to 1918, with a smaller light serving during that interim period after the original lighthouse was demolished in 1896. The light characteristic is three red occultations every 10 seconds, and its geographic range is 11.3 nautical miles. The station was first established in 1840 and became inactive in 1986. The former keeper's house has since been repurposed.
Why it matters: The former keeper's house's integration into the local prison system provides a distinctive example of adaptive reuse for a former navigational aid.
