Baie Ellis Range Rear Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Baie Ellis Range Rear Lighthouse
This cylindrical cast iron tower, standing 16 meters tall, was built in 1906 and first lit the same year. Originally painted white, it served as the rear range light for Baie Ellis. In 1927, the tower and its companion were relocated due to changes in channel alignment. The light was deactivated around 1986. A significant restoration effort in 1989 involved taking the tower down, repairing it, and re-erecting it on a new foundation. During this relocation, the lantern was damaged, and the lantern from the front range light was used to complete the refurbishment. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is architecturally significant as one of the few surviving examples of a French tourelle design in North America and highlights the dynamic nature of maintaining safe passage into Port-Menier's only protected anchorage.
