Ao Kō North Breakwater Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Ao Kō North Breakwater Lighthouse
This 10-meter concrete post lighthouse was built in 1974 and is painted red. It stands on a 1-story concrete equipment room, also red, located on the detached outer breakwater of Ao harbor. The lighthouse marks the north side of the Hino Misaki peninsula, near Hidaka city. Its red light emits an isophase signal on a 6-second cycle, visible for 11.3 nautical miles. The site is open to visitors arriving by boat, but the tower itself remains closed to the public.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for the safe navigation of vessels using Ao harbor by clearly marking the detached outer breakwater. Its light guides local fishing boats and cargo ships through the harbor entrance.
