About Ambrose Lighthouse
Also known as: #Ambrose
Ambrose Light station was established in 1967 as a Texas tower platform. This structure, standing 23 meters tall with its light at the same elevation, carried a light on a square equipment building supported by four piles. It was located near the start of the Ambrose Channel, the main route for vessels entering New York Harbor. The station was heavily damaged in October 1996 after a collision with the Greek oil tanker Aegeo. A new light was installed in 1999, but this was struck by the Maltese freighter Kouros V in January 2001. The physical lighthouse was demolished in 2008 and replaced by a large buoy.
Why it matters: The station marked the beginning of the Ambrose Channel, the principal channel for entering New York Harbor.
