About Aguni Shima Lighthouse
Aguni Shima Lighthouse, built in 1978, is a 16-meter-high, cylindrical concrete tower. This structure, featuring a gallery and an attached single-story concrete equipment building, is situated on the southwestern end of Aguni Shima. Its light has a focal height of 108 meters and emits a white flash every 4 seconds (Oc W 4s), visible for 25.7 nautical miles. The site is accessible to visitors, but the tower is not open. The lighthouse was repainted in 2023.
Why it matters: This light marks the island's southwestern point, serving as a reference for craft in the surrounding waters. It aids local fishing vessels and the ferries that connect the island with the mainland.
