Forty-six containers went over the side of the Philippine interisland ship M/V Span Asia 39 on 3 September 2026 near Calatagan in Batangas province. The Philippine Coast Guard immediately issued a navigational warning.
The ship was heading to Manila North Harbor when rough seas struck around 11 in the morning. Heavy rolling loosened the lashings. Thirty twenty-foot boxes, 11 forty-foot boxes and five open-type containers went into the sea. According to The Maritime Executive, all 46 were empty.
The coast guard dispatched a drone to track the floating debris and positioned BRP Malapascua in the area. The Marine Environmental Protection Force began monitoring nearby protected marine areas.
One more container fell while the ship was maneuvering in the North Manila Anchorage later that afternoon.
