Kerala Red Alert: 1.5-Metre Swell Surge Threatens Kollam Coast Through Sunday

A coastal red alert is in effect for all nine of Kerala's coastal districts from 2:30 AM Saturday, covering everything from Thiruvananthapuram in the south to Kasaragod in the north.

The warning is for Kallakkadal, a sudden swell surge generated by distant Indian Ocean weather systems. Long-period swells travel thousands of kilometres before they arrive. The sea surface can look calm right up to the moment the water rises.

Kollam is directly named. The vulnerable stretch runs from Alappad to Edava, two fishing communities on a narrow sandbar between the backwaters and the Arabian Sea. Fishermen there have been told to keep boats moored inside harbours with spacing to avoid collisions. Launching or landing during peak wave activity is off the table. Gear has to be secured.

The India National Centre for Ocean Information Services, INCOIS, has forecast wave heights of one to one and a half metres at the coast. The alert holds until 2:30 AM on 28 September and will be revised if the forecast changes.

Kallakkadal has claimed lives and fishing equipment along this coast before. The phenomenon does not require a local storm. Swells from a weather system thousands of kilometres away carry enough energy to flood low-lying coastal areas by the time they arrive.

Kollam's coastal traffic has been picking up. Kerala finalised plans to develop Kollam Port as a satellite facility for Vizhinjam International Seaport just days ago, placing the district at the heart of the state's port expansion effort, and conditions like this alert factor directly into coastal operations there.
