About Vengurla Rocks Lighthouse
Also known as: Vengurla Rocks (Burnt Islands)
Constructed in 1870, this stone lighthouse is situated on the westernmost reef of the Vengurla Rocks. The structure includes a 10-meter high octagonal stone tower, which is placed atop a square building. Prior to 1876, open fires served as the illumination source; a lantern and optical apparatus from England were then put into service. The light's focal height is 40 meters, and its established range extends to 17.1 nautical miles. The facility ceased operation around 1890, and its lantern has since been removed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse served as a warning for the Vengurla Rocks, an area with shallows and reefs posing a hazard to vessels navigating the Indian coast.
